Foundations of Contemporary Art: Delving into Nigerian's Art History

picture of Yemisi Shylon museum
May 03, 2024

This era was a renaissance period for Nigerian art, representing a huge transformation from traditional or pre-colonial art to modern art.

The works in the exhibition express the artist's quest to affirm the skill and mastery that Nigeria and African artists as a whole possessed. Doing this, they were practicing nation-building, speaking to the areas of education, media, and political agenda while promoting Pan-Africanist initiatives, mostly using realism as a visual language.
