Eze Goes to School, is a visually striking work by Nigerian artist Lawrence Meju, which reimagines the classical European equestrian portrait tradition through a contemporary African lens, exploring themes of education, identity negotiation, and cultural hybridity. Created using bold flat colour fields, digital media, and layered Igbo motifs, the artwork features a young Igbo scholar-warrior astride a rearing horse, wielding a pen as a symbol of intellectual triumph. Drawing on Meju’s personal journey from Kings College Lagos to a celebrated artist, the work juxtaposes traditional Igbo elements such as ishi agu fabric and a red and white cap with modern symbols like glasses and a cosmopolitan cape, reflecting the tension between tradition and modernity.
